Reactie H.J.J. Uijlenbroek en rectificatie van nieuwsbericht
Henri Uijlenbroek attendeerde de redactie van het NTvT op een onjuiste weergave van onderstaand nieuwsbericht in Nieuwsbrief 93.
Gering effect van antibiotica bij periapicale ontsteking
De doeltreffendheid van het systematisch toedienen van antibiotica ter bestrijding van periapicale ontstekingen is aan twijfel onderhevig. Het Cochrane Instituut liet een literatuuronderzoek uitvoeren naar de effectiviteit van deze behandeling. Slechts 2 onderzoeken voldeden aan de onderzoekscriteria. De onderzoekers stellen vast dat zij onvoldoende bewijs vonden voor de effectiviteit van een behandeling met antibiotica.

Results
Two trials involving 62 patients were included. They compared the effects of oral penicillin V potassium versus a matched placebo given in conjunction with a surgical intervention and analgesics to adults with an acute apical abscess or symptomatic necrotic tooth. One study was considered to have a high risk of bias and the other an unclear risk of bias. The primary outcomes were patient-reported pain and swelling. There were no statistically significant differences in participant-reported measures of pain or swelling at any of the time points assessed within the review. The body of evidence was assessed as at very low quality.
Conclusions
There is very low quality evidence that is insufficient to determine the effects of systemic antibiotics on adults with symptomatic apical periodontitis or acute apical abscess.
De heer Uijlenbroek heeft gelijk. De weergave van het bericht in Nieuwsbrief 93 is onjuist. Geen van beide onderzoeken was goed en het 'evidence' was beneden de maat. Over de gerapporteerde pijn valt derhalve niets te zeggen.
