One of the constitutionally task of the government is the supervision of the public health. Monitoring the health care and the health status of the people is assigned to the State Inspectorate of Health. In the Netherlands, both the first constitution, which dates back to 1798, and the present constitution, state that the authorities are obliged to take measures to promote public health. The existence of a supervisory body, the Public Health Supervisory Service/ State Inspectorate of Health, is the embodiment of this part of the constitution. It is charged with the supervision and monitoring of the health care and the health status of the Dutch population. The actual State Inspectorate of Health consists of three inspectorates: the Health Care Inspectorate, the Health Protection Inspectorate, and the Environmental Protection Inspectorate.
